Contained Line

Contained Line is an autobiographical series of mixed media works consisting of pigment markers; aluminum, gold, and copper leaf on paper and panels

Life, by its very nature is organic; things spin out of control, twist, turn, and feel like everything is going in, and coming from different directions simultaneously.  We attempt to impose structure on it, to control, organize and contain the chaos.

I have always worked with line, but is has been controlled. Now my line twists, turns, and is in constant motion, going in many directions. I’m constantly turning it as I work, applying layers from multiple directions creating texture and depth.

Initially the twisting and turning line seems chaotic, much like life, organically going in many different directions at once. As the demands upon us change, so do the values in the work. Shape superimposes structure, containing the line that simply wants to be free.
